How to Get Hired at an Independent Bookstore
A unique opportunity to work at legendary independent bookstore, Frenchmen Art & Books (FAB), located on world-famous Frenchmen Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. Founded in 1978 by Tom Horner, as the first gay and lesbian-themed bookstore in New Orleans. .
Since 2019, the 4th owner now offers a carefully curated selection of books including New Orleans writers, history, architecture, cookbooks, classic titles, feminist, queer and diverse books, children’s books, science fiction, horror and unusual gift items. We are proud of our knowledgeable and caring staff who strive to intuitively match any reader with a book.
FAB is looking for a part-time [approximately 20+ hours per week] or full-time Bookseller. Flexible schedule, evening, weekend and holiday availability is essential.
Our ideal candidate would possess a love of reading and the willingness to share their enthusiasm with our customers; must be engaging, hardworking, friendly, positive, approachable, sales oriented, self-motivated team player.
In short, an employee comfortable interacting with customers in a thoughtful and friendly manner. The work here is highly customer oriented.
Bookstore, book industry and/or retail experience a plus but not required
· Handselling books and non-book merchandise
· Regularly writing book reviews for website, shelf talkers, etc.
· Interacting comfortably with our POS system (Book Manager) and other programs we depend on to keep the store functioning
· Ringing in-store customers
· Shelving books accurately based on owner’s curation of themes and grooming sections on ongoing basis
· Answering customer inquiry calls
· Processing special orders
· Working daily assigned tasks including store maintenance, and displays
· Assisting with hosting events both in-store and offsite
· Posting event listings on our website and other platforms
· Shipping books out
· Receiving new books
· Carrying and unpacking boxes (as much as 40 lbs)
· Opening and closing the store.
· Working flexible opening/closing shifts
· Being punctual and dependable
§ Literary event planning and execution, virtual and/or in-person
§ Used book buyback experience
§ Backlist ordering with significant historical knowledge of authors and titles
§ Professional experience with social media and e-marketing
Pay will be determined based on level of current experience
Starting pay from $10.25 to $17.25+ per hour, with periodic bonuses based on performance reviews.

Note:
We do require customers to sanitize their hands before shopping.
There may be periods from time to time when we wear masks and require our customers to do as well.
This is a fun job, but it can be stressful at times in a busy but exciting entertainment district. Our hours are from noon (12pm) to as late as midnight (12am), seven days a week.
